Transaero, Russia's first airline, has won the Passenger Choice Award at the country's tenth Wings of Russia National Award Project held in Moscow.

The airline, which operates regular flights to and from London Heathrow Airport to Moscow was represented by the company's director general Olga Plehakova, who accepted the award and thanked the thousands of Russians who voted online.

She said that the nomination was of particular importance to the airline, as the passengers were the main reason for its existence and she assured the audience that Transaero would continue applying every effort to win passengers' sympathy.

The Wings of Russia is a national airline award, established in 1997 by Air Transport Observer magazine, the Russian Air Transport Operators Association and Infomost.com agency.

Transearo calculated that it flew approximately 7.8 billion passenger-kilometers in 2006, and has already travelled1.82 billion in the first two months of 2007.

The airline, launched in November 1991, was the first to operate foreign made airplanes in Russia and a forerunner in the introduction of international service standards, such as business class.

Transearo was also the first Russian airline to offer e-tickets, which were introduced in March 2007.
