Thai Airways 'will remain at Suvarnabhumi'
Posted on: 15 February 2007
Thai Airways, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand, will continue to make use of Bankok's Suvarnabhumi Airport for international flights. The news comes after the Thai government unveiled proposals to reopen the old Don Muang Airport, in view of major repairs taking place at the newer hub.
According to the Associated Press, there is still a chance that Thai Airways will use Don Muang for some domestic flights, but international flights will not be relocated.
The carrier's president, Apinan Sumanaseni, told the AP that the original move to Suvarnabhumi had cost as much as €390 million. It is partly for this reason that he is reluctant to move back to Don Muang as the repairs are conducted.
After a number of delays and procrastinations, Suvarnabhumi was opened in September 2006 and a number of the region's biggest airlines made it their chief hub.
The richest and most populous city in Thailand, Bangkok remains one of the world's premier holiday destinations, largely thanks to its diverse culture, stunning architecture and cheap cost of living.
It is thought that 15 million foreigners visit Bangkok each year, many eager to catch a glimpse of the Grand Palace or the sensational Wat Arun temple.
