Thai Airways announces cut in fuel surcharge

Posted on: 10 November 2008

Thai Airways has announced that it will reduce the fuel surcharge levied on passengers by up to 30 per cent, in a move which could make flights cheaper.

The move reflects the plummeting price of oil which the Times reports has fallen by as much as one-third in recent weeks.

Mr Pandit Chanapai, executive vice president of Thai Airways commercial department, said that that cheaper fuel surcharge was aimed at encouraging more people to fly in for holidays in Thailand.

Thai Airways is hoping that dropping the surcharge will dramatically increase the number of international passengers choosing to fly with the airline, as 80 per cent of its customers come from outside Thailand.

This announcement could significantly reduce the prices of city breaks to Bangkok, but the cut in the surcharge will also benefit passengers on internal flights.

According to the Times, El Al, the Israeli national airline, has also reduced its fuel surcharges.
