Spain highlighted as Europe's cheapest destination
Posted on: 13 April 2011
Brits booking city breaks to Barcelona, Madrid or Malaga will be glad to learn that Spain has been named as Europe's most affordable holiday destination by a recent study. The Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer 2011 shows that prices in the Iberian hotspot are at a four-year low, while neighbouring France is the most expensive on the continent.
This is based on a basket of goods and services, including a meal out for two, drinks and suncream, which will now set you back £42.15 in Spain - 15 per cent less than 2010's cheapest destination, Portugal.
Wallet-watching Brits will also be able to benefit from the relative strength of the pound against the euro, the report added.
Sarah Munro, Post Office head of travel money, said: "This year's barometer shows that prices are pretty competitive in the top European holiday destinations. Spain is undoubtedly best value overall."
Cultural highlights for visitors to Spain to enjoy this spring include the Fiesta de San Isidro, which is taking place in the capital of Madrid next month, with street processions and open-air concerts planned.
