Munich hopeful of Olympic success

Posted on: 30 November 2010

The Germany city of Munich remains hopeful of hosting the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, according to bid officials.

Thomas Bach, president of the German Olympic Sports Federation, has dismissed claims that the hosting of the Games could have a negative impact on the environment.

"The chances of Munich 2018 victory will not suffer from this negative attitude shown by a narrow majority of an opposition party," he added.

If Munich is awarded the sporting event, then it could lead to an increase in tourism for the city and boost businesses for hotels in the region.

Other world cities bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympics includes Annecy in France and Pyeongchang, South Korea.

This year, Munich's popular Christmas market, which dates back until the 14th century, is open every day from 10.00 until Christmas Eve.
