Mobiles 'still used abroad' despite charges
Posted on: 11 November 2011
Britons who make holiday savings by booking cheap flights may be facing excessive bill charges when they return home as they still use their mobiles abroad. This is according to the World Travel Market (WTM) 2011 Industry Report, which found 48 per cent of UK adults still use their smartphones when out of the country for seven days or more.
One holidaymaker was recently charged over £4,000 for roaming charges incurred on a trip to the US.
WTM chairman Fiona Jeffery said this indicates how important the devices have become in people's day-to-day lives.
"Mobile internet access means we now feel we have to be connected 24 hours a day, where ever we are and whatever the cost," she commented.
Broadband is also becoming an increasingly common fixture for the industry side of tourism, as United Airlines recently announced it will be replacing paper flight manuals and navigational charts with an iPad app for pilots.
