Madrid 'ready to blossom' for Olympic bid

Posted on: 09 April 2008

Madrid city breaks could become ever more alluring as the Spanish capital gears up its bid for the 2016 Olympics.

Facing competition from Chicago, Doha, Prague, Rio and Tokyo, the Spanish city will have a tough task to convince the Olympic Commission to grant it 2016 supremacy, but holds the visitor appeal that could play in its favour.

Madrid narrowly missed out on an Olympic berth for 2012, but its renewed candidature now has until 2009 to state its case and prove that the historic city of three million inhabitants is ripe to host the Games.

Currently attending Beijing's General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees, Mercedes Coghen, Madrid 2016 chief executive said: "We are here to learn.

"Having met the technical requirements for the 2012 Games, our own plans are already well advanced.

"Each Games event is different and in 2016 we are particularly keen to ensure that our Olympics and Paralympics have sustainable facilities that leave a wonderful legacy for future generations".
