London Heathrow confirms closure of Terminal 2

Posted on: 26 November 2009

Terminal 2 at London Heathrow was closed this week to enable the construction of a £1 billion replacement for the building.

The facility was Heathrow's first terminal, opening its doors in 1955 and welcoming famous visitors including the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor over the years.

One of the main aims of building a new terminal is to provide a base for carriers belonging to the Star Alliance network, which operates flights to hundreds of destinations around the world.

Colin Matthews, chief executive of airport operator BAA, said: "The closure of Terminal 2 marks an important moment in the modernisation of Heathrow.

"We look forward to the new Terminal 2 providing a new home for the Star Alliance and a better experience for our passengers, with less impact on the environment."

Star Alliance spokesman Lee Hock Lye said that the new building will allow the network's members to "operate under one roof at one of the world's largest aviation hubs".

Air France, Czech Airlines and Alitalia are among the carriers that belong to the group.

From Heathrow, travellers can catch flights to popular city break destinations across Europe including Paris, Prague and Rome.
