City breaks to Tenerife are great, says expert

Posted on: 28 January 2009

Tenerife may be best known for its combination of sun, sea and sand at affordable prices, but according to one travel expert it can also be an excellent place to take a city break.

Writing in the Guardian, Philip Smith claims that Santa Cruz, Tenerife's capital, boasts a cultural scene and architecture that make it well-worth visitng even if you don't go near the beach.

Leading Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, who designed Beijing's bird nest stadium, have recently completed the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes in the city, but Santa Cruz boasts older architectural gems as well.

Mr Smith said: "Pretty much anywhere you'd want to get to is within easy striking distance of the city. And in the last few years, Santa Cruz has been transformed. It now offers something few weekenders have considered before: the Tenerife city break."

With a wide variety of airlines, including Air Europa, offering cheap flights to Tenerife, a city break to Santa Cruz could provide a perfect escape for Brits looking to get away from winter in the UK.
