Posted on: 11 February 2009

Tourists who want to soak up some of the soul of America's south and appreciate the roots of some of the world's biggest bands may want to take a city break to Atlanta.

Georgia, the state where Atlanta is situated, is home to some of the biggest names in rock history, including the Allman Brothers Band – who were responsible for song now used as the theme tune for the BBC's Top Gear, among other hits.

REM, the B-52s, Ray Charles and Otis Reading hailed from the state, drawing on a rich musical heritage which spans big band, country, bluegrass, southern rock, soul and hip-hop.

Atlanta itself is the hometown of many of the biggest acts in hip-hop, including Usher and OutKast.

With several airlines, including US Airways, Delta Airlines and KLM offering cheap flights to Atlanta, discovering the home of southern music's soul could be a great way to escape the gloom of the current credit crunch.
