Asiana Airlines has been named the world's leading air carrier for 2010.

It took top place in the World Airline Awards, a programme organised by Skytrax which this year was based on a survey of nearly 18 million travellers in more than 100 different countries.

The carrier offers flights to Seoul in South Korea, as well as other destinations in the Far East and Australasia such as Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Other operators that featured in the top ten in this year's World Airline Awards include Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Etihad Airways and Emirates.

Virgin Atlantic was voted the top transatlantic carrier on the strength of its flights to New York, Las Vegas and other destinations in the US.

Air Canada took the top award in the category covering North American operators, ahead of Continental and Delta Airlines.

Commenting on this year's awards, Skytrax chairman Edward Plaisted said: "We have grown this survey year on year and take great pride in being the only organisation to undertake a truly global study that represents the travelling public's choice of the best airlines out there."
