Valencia is Spain's third-largest city and as well as being the home of paella, boasts the stunning City of Arts and Sciences, attracting millions of visitors a year with its planetarium, Calatrava-designed architecture, IMAX cinema and the largest aquarium in Europe.

The city also has some very fine period architecture, from the old town gates, to the sumptuously baroque Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas. A visit to the city's cathedral is also worthwhile, as it houses a chalice believed by some to be the Holy Grail.

Also a great city for culture vultures, Valencia's fine arts museum contains works by artists such as Goya, El Greco and Ribera, while the city's March festival, Las Fallas, is known across the country for its noisy celebrations.

Already a highly-regarded centre for yachting, Valencia is hosting the Americas Cup in 2007 and as a result, a whole host of new stylish bars, chic clubs and restaurants have sprung up to compliment more traditional venues.
