In recent years Dubai has become one of the planet's hottest holiday destinations, transformed from its former life as a quiet trading post into a shiny metropolis where it seems like every day a new hotel, entertainment venue or other wonder is springing up.
When you visit Dubai for a city break, you are instantly struck by its dramatic skyline with its sleek tower blocks, modern shopping malls and even man-made islands.
Perhaps the world's top shopping destination, you can find designer goods to your heart's content, or alternatively try haggling for a bargain in one of the city's souks, or markets, which are organised according to what they sell. Perfume, gold and textiles are just some of the wonderful things you can splash out on.
However, there is also a more traditional side to Dubai that shouldn't be missed on a city break. The Dubai Museum reveals a little of what life was like before oil wealth turned the city into today's dazzling metropolis, while a tour of the old town area of Bastakia reveals mud and coral houses with traditional wind-tower air conditioning.
With all this to see and do, it is easy to forget that Dubai is also a beach resort, boasting gorgeous sandy beaches and the warm blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, with the main beaches running along the Jumeira road.
