Virgin Atlantic in the Sky

Famous for being the baby of British entrepreneur Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic offers many great value flights to 25 destinations across the world.

From its hubs at London Gatwick and London Heathrow as well as its secondary hub at Manchester Airport, the airline offers flights to destinations including Sydney, Dubai, Johannesburg, Barbados, Los Angeles and New York.

Services to Havana, Cuba and Nassau in the Bahamas have been planned to start in 2005-2006, while flights to Dubai and Montego Bay, Jamaica, will start in 2006-7, meaning even more great value airfares.

Virgin Atlantic recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of offering flights to Miami, with more than 3.87 million passengers having flown the route since it was launched.

Now the UK's second largest long-haul airline, Virgin Atlantic was the first to provide individual TVs to business class customers on its flights and in 2003 unveiled the Upper Class Suite, giving passengers in Upper Class the longest flat bed, as well as offering great airfares.

The airline was started by Branson - who at the time was better known for Virgin Records - in 1984 and by the end of the decade had carried over one million passengers on its flights.

Virgin Atlantic has been going from strength to strength and turned in a pre-tax profit of £68 million in 2005, the highest profit since 1999.

Virgin Atlantic has won many awards for its flights over the years including Best Long Haul Business Airline in the 2004 Business Travel Awards, Best International Long Haul Carrier in the 2003 Conde Nast Traveller Awards and Best Airline Economy Class in the 2005 British Travel Awards.

The company says that it flies one of the youngest fleets of Boeing and Airbus aircrafts in the world. Virgin Atlantic currently offers great value flights on Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 aeroplanes, but has ordered six double-decker A380 aircraft, the world's biggest aircraft, to be delivered from 2008.

The new double-decker aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines, which are more fuel efficient, produce less emissions and produce 50 per cent less engine noise than in-service aircraft types, meaning customers can enjoy a quieter flight.

It can also carry 30 per cent more passengers than the current largest aircraft, reducing operating costs per seat and allowing Virgin Atlantic to make best use of limited slots at congested airports such as London Heathrow, leading to even more great value airfares for passengers.

The airline also supports an onboard charity, the Loomba Trust, which provides welfare and education to the children of widows in India, who often find it difficult to gain employment due to social stigma.

Virgin Atlantic aims to educate more than 2,000 children of widows in 15 states in India with the money.
