Virgin Atlantic was started by Richard Branson - who at the time was better known for his involvement with Virgin Records - in 1984 and by the end of the decade had carried over one million passengers on its flights.

Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with its popularity in the world of aviation shown by the fact that during the year up to the end of February 2009 it carried 5.77 million passengers, generating an annual turnover of a staggering £2.58 billion.

It is this year celebrating its 25th birthday, with Red Arrow displays and seat upgrade offers at check-in among the ways that it is marking this special anniversary.

Virgin Atlantic AircraftThe airline runs services from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester Airport and Glasgow Airport. These serve countries around the world, meaning that Virgin Atlantic passengers are able to choose from a wealth of destinations.

These include ten US hubs, such as New York's JFK, Washington DC, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Boston. Those wishing to head on a sun-soaked break can choose from several Caribbean locations, including Barbados, St Lucia and Tobago. The company also operates flights to Sydney, Delhi, Tokyo, Lagos and many, many more.

Virgin Atlantic has won numerous other awards for its flights over the years with August 2008 seeing it scoop Best Business Class Lounge at the Skytrax World Airline Awards for its lounge in Heathrow. Meanwhile, the latest figures from the Association of European Airlines ranked Virgin Atlantic in third place when it comes to ensuring that passengers' luggage is not lost, with only 4.9 bags for every 1,000 being misplaced.

Virgin Atalantic Upper Class SeatsThe company says that it flies one of the youngest fleets of Boeing and Airbus aircrafts in the world. Virgin Atlantic currently offers great value flights on Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 aeroplanes. It has also ordered six Airbus A380 aircraft which are due to be delivered from 2013.

Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines will power these new aircraft, which are more fuel efficient, produce less emissions and emit 50 per cent less engine noise than in-service aircraft types, meaning customers can enjoy a quieter flight.

They can also carry 30 per cent more passengers than the current largest aircraft, reducing operating costs per seat and allowing Virgin Atlantic to make best use of limited slots at congested airports such as London Heathrow, leading to even more great value airfares for passengers.
