Based in the Netherlands, Martinair is both a charter and a scheduled airline. From its hub at Schiphol International Airport near Amsterdam it offers cheap flights to more than 50 destinations worldwide including 20 destinations within the Mediterranean region. Known for its good value airfares, Martinair operates scheduled flights to the far East, the Caribbean, Central America, the US and Canada via Amsterdam, with the cheapest airfares available by booking through Major Travel. Martinair has developed a series of interline agreements with other airlines, creating a network of connections. It also has a partnership agreement with main Dutch carrier KLM allowing passengers from many other European countries to take advantage of its flights and its great value airfares. Martinair was started in 1958 by a Dutch entrepreneur, Martin Schroder, who gave his name to the company. Originally known as Martin's Air Charter, the airline soon moved to its base in Schiphol, with its first international flights taking place to Palma de Mallorca. Nowadays, more than two million passengers each year take advantage of the cheap flights from its Schiphol hub in the Netherlands to sunny destinations. Martinair has also flown medical crews, supplies, food and clothing to the site of many natural disasters. The company also owns several subsidiary businesses, including the Martinair Flying School for pilot training and Martinair Food, which provides more than 150,000 meals a day to airlines and canteens. |
