As the national airline for the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways is a relative newcomer to the industry, but has its sights set on being recognised as a top carrier. Launched in 2003, the firm is a truly 21st Century airline. Its first service took off on November 5th 2003, with dozens of destinations being added to its portfolio since then. The growth of the airline is shown by the fact that it carried more than six million passengers in 2008.
Etihad sets out to be different and better - an airline designed to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. You will find evidence of this fresh approach everywhere.
Those looking for a flight in which they are pampered should book an Etihad Diamond Zone service. As the carrier's equivalent to first class, this area features a member of staff for every four or five passengers, ensuring that a traveller's needs are well-catered for.
However, these needs are met before they even set foot on the plane. Diamond Zone passengers are offered a chauffer service which sees them transported to and from the airport. Things remain equally classy while onboard, with state-of-the-art entertainment systems keeping passengers amused. Each flyer will have access to a 23-inch LCD seatback screen, which beams out hundreds of hours of entertainment. A socket to allow consumers to hook their laptops up to the screen to view their own videos is also available.
Those who have watched enough movies and TV shows will be able to lie back and relax thanks to the cabin's 6 ft 8 inch reclining flat beds, with a privacy curtain allowing commuters to enjoy a relaxing sleep before they jet into their destination. The luxury does not stop there though, with Diamond Zone seats featuring massage capabilities, lumbar support and moveable headrests.
The airline recently unveiled its latest first-class cabins at the Arabian Travel Market Show. These included individual suites, additional power sockets and more than 600 hours of entertainment, with passengers served meals on large wooden tables.
James Hogan, chief executive of the carrier, summed up its attitude towards quality by saying: "A downturn is exactly the time when an airline needs to demonstrate its commitment to the very highest standards of service excellence.
"We feel the time is right for us to raise the bar and we believe that our new first class cabin, together with the enhancements we have already made to our first class service, re-establishes our position as market leader in terms of luxury air travel."
Travellers making journeys in Etihad's Pearl Zone will also find plenty of reasons to smile. Seats in this section recline into a bed to allow passengers to relax and unwind, while 15 inch LCD screens give them the chance to view around 350 hours of entertainment. USB ports and laptop connection sockets are also available, ensuring that business travellers will be well-catered for. Complimentary drinks and reading materials are also on offer to enhance the luxurious feel of an Etihad Airways flight.
Meanwhile, respect and courtesy are bywords for Etihad Airway's Coral Zone, which is its equivalent to economy class. Passengers in this section will find a friendly face upon boarding and plenty of cabin crew members will be on hand to make sure that the flight is enjoyable for all travellers. Tray-served meals will be given to passengers individually, with an array of international wines available.
A 10.4 inch LCD screen will showcase 350 hours of entertainment, ensuring that Coral passengers are kept just as amused as those in Pearl and Diamond.
Entertainment is offered in Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi and Sinhala. Etihad aims to be ahead of the game in providing its guests with the very best audio-visual equipment.
Not only do passengers have a wide range of entertainment options to choose from, but they have a vast array of locations from which they can pick to take an Etihad flight to. The carrier recently launched services to Athens, which is its 52nd destination. The airline offers services to 38 countries, across five continents.
Those travelling in Europe can choose from journeys to the likes of Italy, Germany, the UK, France, Russia, Belgium, Belarus, Ireland and many more. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand and Oman are among the airline's Asian destinations. Routes to the US, Canada and Australia are also available, as is travel to African nations such as Morocco and Egypt.
Etihad Airways is able to service these locations due to its fleet size of 44 aircraft, along with 111 orders. These include Airbus A320-200s, AirbusA330-200s and Boeing 787-9s. The firm recently showed its growth intentions by putting in a $7 billion (£4.2 billion) order for 239 new engines for its fleet. The deal was revealed at the Paris Air Show, which took place in June. The engines are set to be delivered to the carrier between 2011 and 2020, ensuring that it can offer superb travel for decades to come.
