Britain's second largest airline, BMI is based at London Heathrow airport, although it offers flights from many other UK airports, including Edinburgh, Leeds and London City Airport.

A company that is committed to safety, it became the first British-based airline to receive accreditation under the International Air Transport Association's new safety audit standard, IOSA.
Founded in 1938, BMI started life specialising in RAF pilot training, before expanding in the passenger route business in the 1950s and 1960s. It became known as British Midland Airways in 1964, a name which stuck until it was renamed BMI in 2003.

In August 2008, BMI announced plans to allow passengers to send text messages while onboard its aircraft. The same month saw the carrier return to the TV screen in an ad campaign to try to encourage more business people to use its services.
