Alitalia is the national airline of Italy, with hub airports at Malpensa airport in Milan and Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino) International Airport in Rome. Currently poised for a takeover by Air France-KLM, the airline is now downsizing its Milan operations and is likely to make Fiumicino its central hub under Air France management.
The company runs flights to 24 airports in Italy, with 1,265 flights a week, as well as flights to 45 airports throughout Europe and an additional 14 airports in the rest of the world, operating a weekly total of 101 trans-continental flights.
With flights from London Heathrow, Manchester and Birmingham airports, passengers can choose to discover the beautiful country of Italy or visit destinations further afield, such as Delhi or Tel Aviv, with flights via one of the airline's Italian gateways.
The airline is currently scaling back its Indian flights, and is focusing on developing increased services to North and South America, Japan and neighbouring countries, providing travellers with an array of city break and longer vacation opportunities.
Alitalia is a member of the prestigious Skyteam international alliance, which also includes top airlines such as Air France-KLM, Delta Airlines and Continental. This membership provides Alitalia and its customers with access to a worldwide flight network serving 684 destinations in more than 130 countries, meaning that the airline can offer an even wider range of flights and cheap airfares.

The popular airline transported about 24 million passengers in 2005, a growth of 7.8 per cent from the company's 2004 passenger numbers. In 2006 passenger numbers grew again, hitting 24.5 million.
The company can trace its routes back to 1947, when a G-12 aeroplane was driven from Turin to Catania by pilot Virginio Reinero. This was followed by Alitalia's first international flight, also that year, from Rome to Oslo.
Due to Alitalia's long history, the company has a great deal of experience in meeting customer needs and expectations.
Passengers flying with Alitalia's Unica economy class can enjoy a combination of outstandingly cheap airfares and high quality service, with the best Italian cuisine waiting for you on board. A range of music and films for all tastes are available, as well as a great selection of magazines and newspapers.
Those who don't mind paying a little bit more for their airfare can enjoy Alitalia's Ottima short and medium-haul business class, featuring access to exclusive Alitalia airport lounges, or the Magnifica business class for intercontinental flights, featuring special ergonomic seats.
Alitalia also has a great frequent flier programme, the MilleMiglia club, allowing passengers to earn airmiles on flights with Alitalia or any of its partners or other Skyteam members. Miles can be redeemed for award tickets or charity donations, making your airfare go even further. And starting from January 2008, passengers have been able to earn MilleMiglia air-miles not only through the distance travelled with the airline but also in relation to the amount spent.
Alitalia's fleet is one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in Europe, with a total of 178 aircraft serving the company's flights. On intercontinental flights, Alitalia uses its range of B777-200 aeroplanes, as well as B737-600 aircraft.
On domestic and international flights, the airline uses a selection of smaller aeroplanes including A321, A320, A319 and MD-80 aircraft.
