Formed in 2001, the airline takes its name from the Arabic word for African. Its eventual aim is to become an airline which serves the whole continent, hence its unusual livery.
Since the carrier's founding, Afriqiyah Airways planes have carried the figure 9.9.99 written in bright numerals on their tails and fuselage.
The number refers to the date on which the African Union - the organisation created to promote cooperation between African states - was founded. The colours of the logo - red green and yellow figures on a black background - are the pan-African colours.

The airline operates a modern fleet of Airbus A320-200 aeroplanes, offering both business and economy class cabins. It has recently placed an order for the acquisition of more planes from the European manufacturer, including up to six A330 aircraft and 14 A320s.

A small cargo service of three to five tonnes is offered on Afriqiyah Airways' passenger flights to destinations in Africa and Europe. It can also offer a cargo-only service between Amsterdam and Tripoli and on towards Africa, reflecting Libya's emerging status as a key North African cargo destination.
