Adria Airways, the national airline of Slovenia, is a successful and popular carrier with an excellent reputation for reliability.

Based in Ljubljana, the country's capital, Adria Airways has a long and proud history of serving the Slovene people.

Originally founded in 1961 as a charter operation, Adria Airlines grew swiftly and soon became one of the major players in the charter airline sector in communist Yugoslavia. Its initial fleet of US made DC-6s was expanded with the addition of larger DC-9s at the end of the 1960s.

Adria Airways AircraftSince the fall out between Tito and Stalin, Yugoslavia had always acted as an independent agent within the communist bloc. As such,it did not suffer from all the trade commitments and restrictions which prevented airlines from other Eastern European countries purchasing western-made aircraft.

By 1970 the carrier was recognised as one of the most reliable airlines in Europe. By the start of the 1980s, Adria Airways aircraft had begun flying scheduled routes around Yugoslavia.

Its pilots were soon given the chance to venture further afield as the airline began operating international routes around Europe later that decade. At around the same time, the airline was welcomed as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

As the end of the 1980s approached, Adria Airlines purchased its first Airbus aircraft, an A320.

When Slovenia unilaterally declared independence following the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991, Adria Airways' planes were temporarily grounded as Yugoslav troops invaded in what became known as the Ten Day War.

Following the country's success in seceding from the control of the Belgrade government, Adria Airways relaunched on a smaller scale, with a reduced route map and fewer flights.

However, as the new republic of Slovenia grew both economically and in terms of political prowess, its airline grew with it.

In 1995, Adria Airways began code-sharing on some of its routes with the German carrier Lufthansa. Just under a decade later, it became a fully-fledged member of the Lufthansa-led Star Alliance.

In the meantime, the airline had purchased modern, sophisticated aircraft and expanded its route map to cover much of Europe. In the same year that Adria Airways joined the Star Alliance, Slovenia was welcomed into the EU.

The country joined the eurozone in 2007 and was the first former-communist state to hold the rotating presidency of the EU in the first half of 2008.

Today, Adria Airways carries more than one million passengers a year to destinations throughout Europe.

Adria Airways operates its great value flights on a modern and environmentally-friendly fleet of three Airbus A320 aeroplanes and seven smaller Canadair Regional Jet 200s LR aircraft as well as two Canadair Regional Jet CRJ 900 LR aircraft, one Boeing 737-500 and one Fokker 100.

With nearly half a century of experience, Adria Airways likes to think that it embodies some of the main features that have always been characteristic of Slovenia and its people - hospitality, friendliness and high quality on all its flights.
