SAS Scandinavian Airline – Flight and Travel Information
While many countries have their own specific flag carriers, the nations of Sweden, Norway and Denmark are unique in sharing a single operator.
The Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) was formed in 1946, when the individual flag carriers of the three Nordic countries decided to coordinate operations. The companies fully merged in 1951.
Based at Copenhagen's coastal airport, the firm became the first in the world to launch a trans-polar route - taking travellers from Los Angeles to Copenhagen. It also offered trans-polar routes elsewhere across the world, including east Asia.
At present SAS flies to 113 airports from its main hub of Copenhagen as well as the airports of Stockholm and Oslo. It operates an intercontinental network spanning both east and west, with nine direct routes to Asia, the Middle East and the US. SAS serves airports in the UK including Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Manchester.
The firm has merged with a number of local carriers, including Blue1 and Braathens, allowing it to offer connections across the region. Code share agreements are also in place with United Airlines, Air China and Thai Airways.
SAS takes part in the Star Alliance, currently the largest airline alliance in the world. Benefits include a frequent flyer programme which can be used across the service's members, including TAP Portugal, US Airways, Swiss International Air Lines and South African Airways.
In July of 2008, SAS scooped the Leadership in Technology Award at the annual Airline Business magazine awards. The airline was praised for its contributions to "green approaches" and the use of biometry at checking-in.
Two months later it announced plans to join other leading air carriers, Boeing and Honeywell's UOP to establish a 'green' group aimed at developing and commercialising sustainable new aviation fuels.
In 2009, SAS was revealed as Europe's most punctual airline, with an overall arrival punctuality of 89.11 per cent. It was the first airline to introduce biometric check-in and also utilises the attest technology in online and mobile check-in systems to save passengers time.
Looking to the future, SAS aims to be the world's most environmentally-conscious airline, with a long-term goal of zero emissions. By 2020, SAS plans to have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by a fifth.
The SAS in-flight service is wide and varied, depending on the value of ticket purchased. On intercontinental flights, economy customers can expect cocktails before dinner and a three-course meal, featuring a salad, hot meal and a dessert. Prior to landing following night flights breakfast is served.
Business class passengers can receive snacks and cocktails before dinner, as well as three-course meal with a choice of four dishes. A selection of cheeses and desserts is also presented to passengers, while night fliers are also offered the option of a cold meal.
Economy class passengers flying to the UK from Scandinavia can enjoy a new food and drink concept named CloudShop which the airline describes as "carefully selected, healthy and high-quality menus developed by Scandinavian chefs".
Business class passengers can also help themselves to sandwiches and coffee and enjoy a restful journey in a 170 degree reclining seat with 155cm of leg room.
