KLM Airlines – Flight and Travel Information
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2009, having been founded in October 1919 as a service for the Netherlands and its colonies. It is therefore the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name.
The global carrier is part of the Air France KLM Group, formed when the two companies merged in 2004. This is now Europe's leading group in the airline business.
Both carriers offer flights to 258 destinations in 110 countries on four continents a with some great value airfares available. However, the airlines still retain their individual identities and each focuses on their own flight operations.
Both airlines are members of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes other prestigious carriers such as Alitalia, Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines, and as of 2009, has ten partners. Between them, they operate flights to more than 905 destinations in 169 countries around the world.
SkyTeam is the world's second-largest alliance in terms of market share, playing an important role in North America, Europe and Asia and holding a strong position in Africa thanks to the partnership with Kenya Airways.
The alliance has further advantages for passengers flying with KLM or Northwest Airlines, as they can also earn airmiles on flights with other Sky Team airlines, making the most of that airfare.
KLM operates flights from a range of UK airports to Amsterdam and beyond. Via its hub at Amsterdam Schiphol, the airline offers flights to worldwide destinations, including Johannesburg, New York and Tokyo. In the 2008-2009 financial year, KLM Group transported 23.5 million passengers and more than 606,000 tonnes of Air France and KLM cargo.
The carrier regularly holds special offers featuring very cheap flights and for the best choice of cheap airfares around, make sure you book your ticket with Major Travel.
KLM has a modern fleet of 214 aircraft, with 203 of these having an average age of 10.8 years. It has succeeded in reducing the average age of its planes by 1.2 years with new acquisitions.
The company has also worked on developing products and services that significantly reduce the impact of its operations on the environment, with its new aircraft making less noise and using less fuel.
Aircraft innovations include adding winglets to its Boeing jets as a means of improving fuel efficiency and thereby reducing CO2 emissions. The winglets improve the aerodynamics of a plane.
This level of comfort is notable on board a KLM flight too. The airline offers three great travel classes from the luxurious World Business Class to the premium KLM Europe Select class for flights within Europe, as well as the great value KLM Economy Class.
Whichever class you fly with, you can be sure of great service, plus delicious meals on longer flights and personal seatback video screens on longer flights in Boeing 777 and Airbus 330 aeroplanes.
In addition, the carrier launched its new Economy Comfort zone in 2009, which offers passengers up to 10cm more legroom and allows them to recline their seats twice as far as in the standard economy section.
The zone is in the front section of the Economy Class cabins so passengers in this area will be able to disembark first before everyone else. There are more than 1,500 Economy Comfort seats available on KLM flights every day.
