Gulf Air– Flight and Travel Information
Gulf Air was originally launched as the Gulf Aviation Company in 1950. Now fully owned by the Kingdom of Bahrain, it has grown from a small commuter service into a major international carrier.
The airline first introduced in-flight services in 1967 and began flying to London in April 1970, using VC10 aircraft. Other important moments in the company's history include its induction into the International Air Transport Association in 1981 and the addition of the Boeing 767 to its fleet in 1988.
Services to destinations including Istanbul, Damascus, Fujairah and Nairobi were introduced shortly after Gulf Air took delivery of the 767.
Today, the airline flies to more than 40 destinations in nearly 30 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe.
Most of the carrier's international flight locations are directly linked to its hub at Bahrain International Airport. In Europe, the carrier serves London, Paris and Frankfurt, while people travelling to Africa can access connections to Khartoum and Addis Ababa.
Gulf Air also operates an extensive network in the Far East that includes links to Mumbai, Manila, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
People travelling to any of the airline's destinations should book with Major Travel to guarantee cheap fares.
Customers who choose Gulf Air will benefit from the company's range of onboard services. On its long-haul routes, the carrier uses an Airbus A340-300 featuring first class seats with an 80-inch pitch and a 15-inch monitor with 21 audio and video channels.
Business and economy class passengers are also offered video screens, access to a personal telephone and other amenities on long-haul flights.
On short- and medium-haul sectors, Gulf Air uses Airbus 320, 321 and 319 aircraft with a range of features and provisions to ensure that customers have a comfortable and enjoyable journey.
There were a number of changes to the airline's operations in 2009, including a move to Terminal 4 at London Heathrow in October of this year.
Passengers now benefit from a new check-in area featuring dedicated counters for first and business class customers at the terminal. Gulf Air said that the move will also provide "increased levels of comfort and convenience" for all travellers.
Christina Vidos, the carrier's general manager in the UK and Ireland, said: "Thanks to a multi-million pound investment by BAA we can now offer our customers an even better flying experience from the moment they set foot in the concourse to arriving at their final destination."
When Gulf Air launched its winter timetable for 2009-10, it intended to boost Bahrain's status "as the fastest hub in the region" by offering travellers improved connections.
Gulf Air constantly strives to provide a better service to its passengers and regularly updates its fleet to include new aircraft.
In October 2010, the carrier took delivery of two new Embraer 190-100 aircraft, which meant that it had received 12 new planes within a 12-month timeframe.
