El Al Israel – Flight and Travel Information
The airline was established in 1948, setting the world record for the longest non-stop commercial flight between New York and Tel Aviv in 1961.
Today, El Al is known for the high quality of its flights and has been ranked by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as one of the world's three most efficient air carriers.
El Al has an all-Boeing fleet including four Boeing 747-400 and six Boeing 777-200ER which are used to fly into London Heathrow.
The carrier also has five Boeing 737-800 aircraft on order to be leased for delivery in summer 2008 to early 2009 as well as a Boeing 747-400 aircraft to be purchased from Singapore Airlines in November 2008. In 2012, the airline is due to receive four Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.
Heathrow Airport recently became the first transport hub allowing El Al passengers to check-in online and print off their boarding pass. It allows travellers to avoid the long queues and means that those with no luggage can arrive at the airport just an hour and a half before departure.
More recently the airline has offered customers the chance to get bar-coded boarding passes sent to their phones or PDAs, meaning they do not have to wait in queues. El Al says travellers do not have to wait to check-in and those with carry-on luggage can head straight to the boarding gate.
Regular holidaymakers can also opt for the Ticket Pack scheme, aimed at students or business fliers, which give a maximum of ten flights per year for up to four passengers to four destinations.
On board, you can expect the same high quality from an El Al flight. Economy class passengers are provided with spacious seats and a courteous cabin service to attend to your needs during the flight.
A variety of delicious meals are available allowing you to sample a flavour of your destination, with European, French-speaking European, eastern European, transatlantic, Far East and Israeli-Mediterranean themed meals available.
For health conscious passengers, a healthy meal option is available, while a variety of fine Israeli wines adds to the culinary journey.
Most recently El Al flew Pope Benedict XVI back to Rome, following his visit to Israel, carrying him and his delegation back from the trip in a Boeing 777. The airline put an olive branch on the side and ensured the in-flight team represented three major religions. The invitation to the flight was presented to the Pope by Amikam Cohen, chairman of the airline's board, and chief executive officer of the airline Haim Romano.
El Al's programme of entertainment includes some great international and Israeli audio stations, as well as films and TV programmes broadcast either on individual seat back screens or a main cabin screen, according to the model of aeroplane for your flight.
Passengers can also opt for an individual entertainment system named a VIDIBOX which offers users a wide range of movies, TV series, sports programs, travel and food channels, games and CDs. Its touch-screen makes it easy to use and Economy Class passengers travelling to European destinations can make use of it for just £3.50.
For those who want to spend a bit more on their airfare for a little extra luxury during their flight, El Al offers a choice of three premium classes - El Al Business Class, El Al Platinum and First Class.
These classes offer passengers a range of extra benefits including enhanced meals and service, extra-comfortable and spacious seats and an elegant amenities kit.
El Al also runs a frequent flyer club, which allows travellers to use bonus points to upgrade their seats or buy new flights. The King David Club goes one step further and offers passengers treats, including using the lounge which comes complete with telephones, internet services and a fax machine for businessmen, or more luxurious services for those travelling for pleasure. Food, drink, massage chairs and showers are also available as are beer and wine, making the perfect start to a flight.
