Delta Airlines is the world's largest carrier, operating a network of flights throughout the United States and around the world.
Alongside its subsidiaries Delta Shuttle, Delta Connection and Northwest Airlines, Delta Airlines carries more than 170 million passengers to more than 350 domestic and international destinations.
However, although Delta is now one of the dominant players in the US and international aviation markets, this has not always been the case.
The carrier started from humble beginnings operating crop-dusting aircraft in the southern states of the US. It was founded as Huff Daland Dusters in 1924 in Macon, Georgia, but soon moved the focus of its operations south to the Mississippi Delta and changed its name.
From these beginnings, the newly created Delta Airlines grew swiftly, moving its home hub to Atlanta in 1941 and expanding its operations through a sequence of mergers and acquisitions.
In the 1970s Delta entered the jet age with the purchase of wide-bodied aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and purchased the US regional carrier Northeast Airlines.
Delta continued to thrive after airlines in the US were deregulated. Three cabin crew members, inspired by the effective management of the company's leadership during the first five year's of Delta's regulation, launched Project 767, which raised money to purchase a Boeing 767 from grateful Delta crew members, retirees and the airline's community partners.
The 767 was christened Spirit of Delta and remained the airline's flagship aircraft until 2006.
Last year, Delta Airlines merged with Northwest Airlines, another large US carrier, creating the world's largest single airline.
From its hubs in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Memphis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York-JFK, Salt Lake City, Amsterdam and Tokyo-Narita, this super-airline now offers services to 368 destinations in 66 countries.
Its UK destinations include Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, London and Southampton airports.
The airline is a founding member of global airline alliance SkyTeam, which offers its customers an extensive range of worldwide destinations, flights and services.
Passengers have the opportunity of redeeming SkyMiles on more than 14,000 flights offered by SkyTeam and Delta Airlines' other partners, meaning those cheap airfares go even further.
In April 2008, the SkyMiles Store was opened as an online shopping destination providing a wide a range of travel-related products such as luggage, luggage tags and passport holders.
Delta Airlines often runs special deals on its flights with great value airfares and for the very best airfares that the company can offer, make sure you book through Major Travel.
For premium travellers, The Delta Reserve Credit Card and the Delta Reserve for Business Credit Card was launched in 2008, offering Medallion Qualification Miles through which users can access the airline's Breezeway priority boarding and security lanes, as well as the Delta Crown Room Clubs.
The airline uses a range of aircraft in its large fleet, including Boeing 737-700 series aircraft, 767-300 series aircraft and Airbus A319-100 series aeroplanes.
Passengers in all classes on long-haul Delta Airlines flights can enjoy great movie and musical entertainment during their flight as well as a range of television favourites and great food.
As one of the world's largest carriers, Delta Airlines has come a long way since the early days of Huff Daland Dusters.
