Based at Dublin Airport, Aer Lingus does not just offer short-haul flights, but runs services to the USA and the Middle East as well. Last year, it began operating flights from Dublin to Washington, the first service to be launched under the Open Skies agreement between the EU and the US.

In March of 2008, Aer Lingus introduced flights from Belfast to London Heathrow and seven months later had a 42 per cent market share. October of 2008 will see Aer Lingus operate direct, twice a week flights from Dublin to Sofia in Bulgaria.

Its popularity as a low-cost airline was further proven in September 2008 when figures showed it flew nearly one million passengers in that month alone - despite the global economic troubles. The figures mark a 103,000 passenger increase on the same month in 2007.
